My Story:
I first went to The Derby in late 1997. It was a wild scene, all the dancers, the crowd in their vintage clothes, the band... everything. I knew I wanted to try dancing because it looked so fun. But, I'd never "danced" before so I didn't know what to expect. It wasn't until 1998 that I actually made it to a lesson. To my surprise, I picked up the basics of East Coast swing pretty quickly. But, it was that "other dance" I saw, that looked so cool. I waited until I thought I was "good enough", before I took my first Lindy Hop class. That was probably 1999, with Eric & Silvia. It didn't go smoothly... to make a long story short, I almost gave it up to become an eternal East Coaster. I had this mental block of trying to keep separate, 6 count and 8 count moves (from lack of better knowledge). Then, magically one day, it clicked in. I figured out that you can mix both 6 count and 8 count together into 1 seamless dance. That's when I finally "got it" and the rest is history... Today, I'm the old guy on Ben & Sheri's awarding winning "One2Swing Jitterbugs" competition/performance dance team.
