My Story: Whitey's Lindy Hoppers was the premiere Lindy Hop troupe of the 1930's and 1940's. Started by boxing promoter Herbert "Whitey" White, Whitey's Lindy Hoppers traveled everywhere and danced everywhere. In modern day terms, they Lindy Bombed everywhere.
The dance troupe started out of a need for a Lindy Hop performance team. In the 1930's, as stories of swing dancing in Harlem made its way around New York, more and more requests came from socialites for Lindy Hop performers at parties.
Herb White started picking Lindy Hoppers to perform at these parties which later turned into a vision of putting Lindy Hop on the map. Without the luxury of Youtube, the Internet, and other modern forms of publicity, Herb went the old fashioned way of putting his dance team in a car or on a train and having them travel and dance wherever they could. And it definitely worked as in 1937 a group of Whitey's Lindy Hoppers got to shake hands with the Queen of England!
And eventually Whitey's Lindy Hoppers found themselves in the movies, most notably the Marx Brothers movie "Day at the Races" and the Olsen and Johnson movie "Hellzapoppin". Seventy years later, these clips continue to inspire many of today's Lindy Hoppers including a resurgence of a style inspired by these clips nicknamed the "Harlem" style of Lindy Hop.
